Is my website really that important?

"Your website is still THE ONLY piece of real estate that you own and can control on the internet."

We get asked ALL the time – “I have Facebook and Instagram profiles for my business, is my website really that important?”

Um… heck yes!

Consider the volatility of social media for a moment… does anyone remember where MySpace went?

Look at what's happened to Twitter since Elon Musk took over… Consider recent bans of Tik Tok from government staff devices amid data safety concerns...

Social media is a wonderful tool to utilise as part of your overall marketing, but it’s also highly volatile and each platform’s future is finite. So please don’t be foolish and put all your eggs in the social media basket and abandon your trusty website!

Now that we've established that your website IS important, consider your current site's performance.

An ‘audit’ is not a foreign concept for venue managers. But when was the last time you or your team conducted an audit of your website?

Quick self audit for your website

We’ve put together a few key elements for you to consider when auditing your website:

Competitor audit – this might take a little more work but is a worthwhile exercise. Conduct a SWOT on a competitor’s website

to discover opportunities or weaknesses in your site. Consider:

  • Is their website easier to navigate than yours?
  • How does their page loading time compare to yours?
  • Are there tools or items missing from their site that you could integrate into yours to give you a competitive edge?
  • How does their site rank in search engine compared to yours?

Responsive – is your website responsive and does it adjust well to all devices (keeping in mind that over 60% of searches are conducted on mobile devices)? The mobile view has never been more important.

UX (user experience) design optimisation – UX is all about the end user’s motivation. Why is someone on your site and are

you helping them find the info they are after, in the easiest way possible? This includes the actual content on your website and the design of the site.

  • Ask yourself if your website’s content answers the questions
  • your team are frequently being asked.
  • Take a look at the site layout:
  • Are headings and navigation menus easy to follow and obvious
  • to the end user where they need to visit to find the info they
  • are seeking?
  • Are buttons large and clearly visible?
  • Is it easy to ‘go back’, or to find home if you wanted to navigate
  • to another area of the site?
  • Is the call to action on each page obvious and visible?

A self audit should be quick to do and give you an idea of how well (or poorly) your website is performing.
